Indian cuisine is widely known for its complex blend of spices that give dishes their lively taste, packed full of flavour. But did you know that traditional Indian food is also very healthy? It won’t be hard to see why, once we’ve told you about the ingredients of Indian cuisine.
Let’s start with the spices. Indian food is all about spices, and these aren’t only for giving dishes that incredible standout flavour. Spices contain numerous health benefits. Turmeric may be the most popular spice used worldwide today for its anti-inflammatory properties. It is often used in Indian cooking to give curries their vibrant colour; but it can be mixed into rice or tea as well, to attain more of its benefits.
Chilis are also often used in Indian cooking. They can range in spice level from mild to very hot, depending on your preference, but one thing for sure is that chilis improve the immune system and metabolism.
Since a large part of the Indian population is vegetarian, Indian cuisine consists of a wide use of vegetables. Chickpeas act as a main ingredient in many curries, and these round, yellowish beans are a great source of protein, fibre, zinc and folate. Superfoods like tomatoes and spinach are also widely used, which contain a load of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
Indian sauces are vegetable-based as well, consisting of a process of mashing or blending vegetables together with other spices to create tasty sauces, dips or chutneys. Another component used for dips is natural yogurt, which strengthens the immune system and bones, is high in protein and promotes weight management, among many other health benefits. In traditional Indian cooking, yogurt is used for curries instead of cream or coconut milk.
Indian cooking also prefers the use of vegetable, sesame or peanut oil, rather than butter, which keeps dishes lower in saturated fat.
Last but not least, traditional Indian cooking makes everything from scratch. This means that only fresh, unprocessed ingredients are used, giving dishes a higher nutrient content. The cooking time for vegetables is likewise kept short, retaining the vegetables’ vitamins better. May we also add that since Indian dishes are so flavourful, just a small portion is enough to satisfy your tastebuds and keep you from overeating.
The health benefits of Indian cuisine are far-reaching. If healthy food is an essential characteristic for you and your diet, then you would definitely do well to add Indian cuisine as a regular part of it.
